Starting Point

02/20/2012

I CAN DO THIS!

Today is the starting point of my journey to get healthy and reclaim my life. If you haven't read the pages on the right hand side of the blog, please do so before continuing.

In this post I'll simply share with you the basic lifestyle decisions I've made as I begin my journey, and I'll ask for your feedback as I tweak this plan to make it as effective as possible for me.

The cornerstone principles of my plan are:
  • A low saturated fat, low glycemic eating plan, limiting processed and fast foods, and emphasizing fresh produce and natural snacks (sorry, food budget). The foundation of the eating plan will be well-rounded meals with proper proportions of protein, slow carbs, and fast carbs. The calorie goal? Between 1,500-1,700 per day.
  • Fitness center workouts 3 times per week.
  • Morning and evening fat burning DVD workouts (about 15 minutes each), each day of the week.
  • As the weather allows, an active lifestyle of evening walks with my wife, weekend hikes at local state parks, and recreational sports.

What do you think? What would you change? Any ideas to supplement these? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

  1. Go for it Joe! I don't know if this would help you or not, but while I have gestational diabetes, I need to fast for 2 hours after each meal. It helps me to think more about what I am taking in. Also, I have found that if I am going to be sitting around after a meal, my blood sugar is sure to be high, but if I keep active, I can eat pretty normally.
    You can do it!

  2. Water with lemon juice and liquid Stevia(healthy lemonade. I've come to enjoy this when I feel like I just need something other than water and don't want all the sugar of fruit juice.

    1. Thanks, Liesel Fuel! I bought some Stevia today, though it's not the liquid kind. Can you make the lemonade with powder Stevia?

  3. Joe, this sounds like aggressive action and I applaud your determination and pray for your fortitude. This may feel all consuming for awhile, but hopefully will fade into the background after awhile and just be part of what you do. Soon a day will not seem complete unless you have done these things. Good habits can be additive just as well as bad ones. Right? We love you very much and wish you all the best on this journey to good health.

    1. Thanks, Mom. I appreciate it.

One thing you said has been sticking with me all week -- "Soon a day will not seem complete unless you have done these things." This is prophetic and inspiring. Thank you.
